The Bush Potato painting tells the Dreamtime story of women of the Napurrula and Nakamarra skin groups who are searching the countryside for bush potatoes. When they search for food the women always take coolamon dishes and digging stick, their basic hunting equipment.
Bush potatoes grow as roots underground, so the women must use the digging sticks to find them. As the bulbs increase in size, they often cause the ground surface above to crack very slightly. The women locate the hairline crack in the ground, up to a metre from the main stem, as this would indicate just where to dig for the bulbs. The potatoes are collected in the coolamon dishes and carried back to camp to be cooked in hot coals.
