Artist Information

DOB: c.1931

Birthplace: Lajumanu

Language: Warlpiri

Skin name: Nungarrayi

Biddy Nungarrayi Long, also known as Tiny by some, is a traditional woman who spent her early life on Mt Doreen cattle station when her family was not walking the Tanami Desert.

In 1986, Biddy began painting in Lajamanu after a TAFE course introduced the community to acrylic and canvas. Initially, she used ochre to paint on the body for ceremonies, a practice she continues, but now primarily utilizes acrylic on canvas and linen. Nungarrayi takes pleasure in the variety of colours now available to her. Her late sister, Lily Nungarrayi Jurrah (also known as Hargraves), was a dedicated artist, and they often painted together at the Warnyaka Art Centre.

Her paintings encapsulate years of bush living and travelling by foot. She employs traditional iconography to depict the Jukurrpa, associated sites, and other elements.

Biddy Nungarrayi previously used the surname Jurrah but now prefers to use Long, derived from her late husband. Her art has been widely exhibited across Australia as well as internationally, including in France, Germany, and Poland. Additionally, her works are part of major national collections.
